Patrick McCartan

Question:

20 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Health if it is intended to amend the legislation under which persons can be committed to mental hospitals, especially in light of the details which emerged during a recent case in the High Court in which a young Dublin woman had her detention declared unlawful; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

36 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health when amending legislation will be introduced to update the provisions of the Health (Mental Services) Act, 1981; if he is satisfied with the present legislative provision; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 36 together. My Department are currently carrying out a review of all aspects of the law governing mental treatment.
