Question:21 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Health when he proposes to introduce legislation to provide for the statutory registration of social workers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is my intention to have draft legislation for the statutory registration of designated health and social services professions presented for consideration by the House as early as possible during the current year. The proposed legislation will provide for the statutory registration of social workers.
There has been extensive consultation between officials of my Department and the various professional groups for whom the legislation is intended and discussions are continuing with some groups which are as yet undecided about participation in the registration process.
