Vol. 396 No. 7

Written Answers. - Maternity Allowance.

Phil Hogan

Question:

55 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Education if there is any scheme in her Department or the Department of Social Welfare under which a maternity allowance is payable to a secondary teacher who is on a career break; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A number of teachers — approximately 25 per cent — in secondary schools pay PRSI contributions at the A1 rate and may be entitled to benefit as a result of such payments. Any maternity benefits which might be payable to these teachers while on a career break is a matter for the Department of Social Welfare.
