Vol. 397 No. 1

Written Answers. - Whitbread Race.

Gerard Brady

Question:

107 Mr. G. Brady asked the Minister for Education, in view of the successful participation of the NCB Ireland in the Whitbread Round the World Race, if she will hold a civic reception for the crew who manned the boat and for those who promoted the project.

I understand that this race is not expected to finish until early May 1990. I will be happy at that stage to give consideration to any request for the holding of a reception.

Question:

108 Mr. G. Brady asked the Minister for Education, given the widespread national interest in the voyage of NCB Ireland, if she will consider giving Government sponsorship to a major North Atlantic Yacht Race out of Ireland which would highlight the natural advantages for marine recreational activities in this country.

I will be pleased to give consideration to any application in respect of such an event.

Grant-aid for the holding of major international sporting events with a possible tourism benefit is available from my Department.
