Vol. 397 No. 3

Written Answers. - Kidney Dialysis Treatment Services.

Ivan Yates

Question:

171 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the problems of patients in the south east who require kidney dialysis treatment and who cannot avail of this treatment at Ardkeen Regional Hospital, County Waterford due to the lack of staff apportioned to operate the equipment which has been provided there; and when this problem will be rectified and a full service will be provided through Ardkeen Hospital.

Question:

172 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the national situation in relation to the hospital services for kidney dialysis patients throughout the country with specific reference to (a) the numbers requiring treatment on a routine basis (b) the hospitals which have kidney dialysis equipment and (c) the level of service being provided by each of those hospitals; if he has any proposals to improve the regional spread of services in order that patients do not have to travel long distances for regular treatment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 171 and 172 together. The number of patients requiring this treatment on a routine basis is about 400. The hospitals providing a renal dialysis service are as follows:——

Renal Dialysis Units

Patients presently receiving haemodialysis

Patients receiving C.A.P.D. (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis)

Beaumont

I hope to establish further satellite renal dialysis units at Castlebar and Cavan Hospitals as soon as is practicable.
At present there are five kidney dialysis stations at Waterford Regional Hospital. There will be increased capacity for kidney dialysis in the new hospital currently under construction at Ardkeen. In the meantime, my Department is discussing with the South Eastern Health Board the possibility of employing additional nursing staff so that further patients from the catchment area can avail of existing facilities at Waterford Regional Hospital.
