Vol. 397 No. 4

Written Answers. - Employment in South-East.

Noel Davern

Question:

29 Mr. Davern asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the resentment felt following his recent announcement of approximately 600 jobs in the south-east area, excluding Carrick-on-Suir; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The ten new business projects which I announced for the south-east region at the end of January will provide 635 jobs in Counties Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Carlow and South Tipperary. I am confident that the workforce in Carrick-on-Suir will benefit from at least some of these projects.

I am fully aware of the problems of South Tipperary, and of Carrick-on-Suir in particular, and, indeed, the Deputy was a member of a deputation which discussed these with a Minister of State in my Department on 1 March. I am assured by the IDA that they are actively promoting the town for suitable manufacturing industry.
