Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Local Government Financing.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

265 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if he is now in a position to bring forward the proposals for the financing of Local Government which he promised on 24 February 1988 to a delegation from the General Council of County Councils; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The position in relation to the discussions at the meeting referred to is as I outlined in my reply to Question No. 5 of 9 March 1989. I would also refer the Deputy to the Government's announcement of 5 April 1990 concerning local government reorganisation and reform which, in relation to local authority financing, indicates that the Cabinet sub-committee is to make recommendations on the criteria on which the contribution from central funds to local authorities should be made on a statutory basis.
