Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin School Grant Application.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

324 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Education the reason her Department have failed to acknowledge, reply or deal with correspondence of an urgent nature from a school in Dublin (details supplied) which correspondence was sent to the Department on 18 January, 1990, 28 February, 1990, 21 March, 1990 and 30 March 1990, interspersed with numerous telephone calls none of which were dealt with; if she will make a statement indicating the reason for this discourtesy and reply to the matters raised in the correspondence (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The difficulties in relation to correspondence from the school referred to by the Deputy arose from pressure of work in the primary schools building section of my Department. A senior official from my Department discussed the matter fully with the principal teacher of the school recently who accepted that no discourtesy was intended.

The question of the sanction and payment of a grant for the works, the subject of the correspondence, is being considered urgently in consultation with my Department's engineer and a decision will be conveyed to the school authorities at an early date.
