Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Qualified Teachers.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

358 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if she will give the updated facts further to her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 339 of 19 October 1988; and if she will include in her reply information on 1988 and 1989 graduates.

The information requested by the Deputy on graduates up to and including 1989 is set out in the following table.

The Deputy will be aware that my Department recently sanctioned 95 additional permanent posts under the special scheme of teaching assistants for schools serving disadvantaged areas and 30 additional remedial posts. In all in excess of 230 new appointments of teachers to permanent posts, in addition to appointments from panels, have been approved in the course of the current school year. Some boards of management have not yet filled posts recently sanctioned.
From 1 September 1990 there will be a reduction of one unit in the enrolment figures for the appointment and retention of teachers in national schools. It is estimated that this will result in approximately 250 additional teaching posts and the retention of a further 250 posts.
