Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Archaeological Excavation Grants.

John Bruton

Question:

102 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance if his Department are sanctioning grants for archaeological excavations; and if he will indicate how the policy of his Department in allocating grants for excavations is co-ordinated with that of the National Heritage Council, which are also giving grants for excavations.

Grants are made available annually by the Commissioners of Public Works for archaeological research excavations on the recommendation of the Royal Irish Academy. In exceptional circumstances they give financial assistance towards the cost of archaeological rescue excavations necessitated by development projects.

The National Heritage Council is aware of this policy. Procedures are in place to ensure that the commissioners are advised of the council's intention to make grants available for archaeological excavations.
