Vol. 398 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

32 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools which do not have access to the services of a remedial teacher; and the number of these schools which have applied to her Department for sanction for a remedial teaching post to serve their schools.

Michael Ferris

Question:

61 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education the total number of remedial teachers likely to be employed in 1990 in all national schools compared to the total number in each of the years 1985 to date; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 61 together.

Remedial teaching posts are allocated in accordance with priority of need and not on the basis of applications.

Of the 3,247 primary schools 1,100 have a remedial teaching service. The number of approved remedial teaching posts in primary schools each year since 1985 is as follows:

School Year

No. of Remedial Posts

1985-86

827

1986-87

857

1987-88

857

1988-89

857

1989-90

887

I intend keeping the appointment of further remedial teachers under review.
