Vol. 398 No. 2

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation in Turkey.

Peter Barry

Question:

74 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the increase in tourism in Turkey, he will open an embassy in that country.

Ireland's Ambassador to Italy is concurrently accredited to Turkey. Our network of resident diplomatic representatives is small and must remain so for the foreseeable future given our limited financial and personnel resources. Possibilities for its extension are examined from time to time in the light of our national and international interests and the availability of the necessary resources. Decisions to establish resident relations are announced in consultation with the other Government or Governments concerned.

Ireland maintains a Consulate, headed by an Honorary Consul, in Istanbul. The Honorary Consul reports to the Embassy in Rome which has consular responsibility for Turkey.
