Vol. 398 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dumping of Fish.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

36 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for the Marine the total value and tonnage of fish disposed of by dumping in 1988 and 1989; and if he will make a statment on the matter.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. Information on the quantity of fish dumped relates only to those species of fish covered by the EC market support programme.

Dumping of fish is, of course, only one of the methods used in disposing of fish withdrawn from the market under the market support system of the European Community's Common Fisheries Policy. Fishermen's producers' organisations have been urged by my Department to avoid dumping where possible and to dispose of the surplus fish for fishmeal or animal feed. In practice the bulk of fish withdrawn is sent for reduction to fishmeal.

Following is the statement of fish dumped during the two years in question.
