Vol. 399 No. 3

Written Answers. - Speech Therapy Services.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

143 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health the steps which are being taken to ensure the filling of seven speech therapist posts in the Eastern Health Board area, in view of the urgent need.

Ivan Yates

Question:

150 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the lack of speech therapists nationally and particularly in certain areas of the Eastern Health Board (details supplied); and if he will make arrangements to recruit extra staff in order that the waiting list may be dealt with.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 143 and 150 together. I am aware that there is concern about the present level of speech therapy services. However, it is a matter for each health board to assess the needs for different categories of health personnel in its area and to apportion the resources available to them in accordance with their priorities.

With regard to the position in the Eastern Health Board, following a recent competition, six speech therapists are due to commence employment with the board in September next.
