Written Answers. - Motor Vehicle Seat Belts.

Alan Shatter

Question:

26 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment whether he will introduce legislation to provide for the compulsory wearing of seat belts in the back seats of motor vehicles so as to reduce the seriousness of injuries suffered when traffic accidents take place.

The question of the compulsory wearing of rear seat belts is being considered in the context of EC proposals relating to the fitting and wearing of seat belts, including rear seat belts, in private cars, minibuses and light goods vehicles.
