Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - Waste Water Treatment.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

30 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for the Environment if the proposed major EC directive on sewerage facilities, designed to protect coastal areas from pollution will be adopted at the meeting of the EC Council of Environment Ministers in Dublin next month; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

77 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment the steps he is taking to ensure that the EC municipal waste water treatment directive is adopted at the June meeting of the EC Council of Ministers.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 30 and 77 together.

The proposal for a council directive concerning municipal waste water treatment was published in January 1990. It has since been discussed on a number of occasions by the council's environment working group and a report on progress will be on the agenda for the meeting of the Council of Environment Ministers on 7 and 8 June. However, it will not be possible to adopt the proposed directive at that meeting as detailed consideration of the major issues involved is not sufficiently advanced and because the opinion of the European Parliament is not yet available.
