Vol. 399 No. 10

Written Answers. - Nuclear Energy.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

102 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Energy if he can rule out the possibility of the importation of nuclear energy at any time in the future, through the proposed electrical interconnector with the EC grid, in view of the fact that nuclear energy makes up 35 per cent of the energy in the EC grid and figures just released show that nuclear energy is the fastest growing energy sector in the EC having increased by 7.9 per cent in 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the event of an interconnector being put in place supply contracts will be for specified aggregate power requirements. In an integrated European power grid it would be quite impossible to isolate one source of power from another.
