Question:

165 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the number of indictable crimes and the number of gardaí available for crime fighting activities (a) in Dublin and (b) in the rest of the country in 1980 and in each of the last five years.

The crime statistics sought by the Deputy for years up to and including 1988 are set out in the relevant Garda Commissioner's annual reports of crime. The provisional figures for the level of indictable crime recorded for 1989 are 51,114 for the Dublin Metropolitan Area and 35,678 for the rest of the country.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in the table below.
