Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Swords (Dublin) School Maintenance Expenditure.

Seán Ryan

Question:

216 Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the claim by Swords Community Council, to both County Dublin Vocational Educational Committee and the Department of Education, for compensation in respect of the community council's expenditure on the renovation, maintenance and upkeep of the old vocational school, North Street, Swords, County Dublin, during their three year occupancy of same; in view of the commitment made by officials of her Department at a meeting with the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee in Marlboro House on 3 November 1986 to compensate Swords Community Council for work carried out on the building in question; and if she will enter into negotiations with Swords Community Council immediately.

Nora Owen

Question:

220 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education when she will reimburse Swords Community Council for money spent by them on improvement works to a Department of Education building (details supplied).

I propose to take Questions Nos. 216 and 220 together.

The reimbursement of Swords Community Council for expenditure incurred by them in refurbishing the building concerned is a matter in the first instance for the County Dublin Vocational Committee.

I understand that legal opinion obtained by the committee is that the committee has no legal obligation to reimburse the community council for the money they expended on the building.

No commitment was made by officials from my Department in relation to compensation for the community council.
