Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Radon Gas.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

75 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Energy the incidence and the level of radon gas in Irish houses; and his views on whether new planning regulations are required to overcome the problem of radioactive radon gas leaking into buildings.

About 96 per cent of Irish homes have levels of radon which are not significant. A small number of houses — about 4 per cent — are estimated to have radon levels of above 200 becquerels per cubic metre, the level agreed by Government as the reference level above which remedial measures should be considered.

The Minister for the Environment is responsible for deciding and disseminating information on the best means of overcoming the problem of high radon levels in houses and other buildings.
