Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Interdepartmental Competition.

Monica Barnes

Question:

104 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for Finance if, with regard to the 1989 interdepartmental competition for posts of assistant principal, he will outline (a) the number of male and female applicants, (b) the number of male and female applicants placed on the panel, (c) the number of women and of men who have subsequently been offered assistant principal positions and (d) in view of the disparity between the ratio of female-male applicants, if he will review structures and procedures so that positive action will be introduced to bring about a fairer female-male balance.

The information sought by the Deputy in relation to the 1989 interdepartmental competition for posts of assistant principal is as follows:

Female

Male

Total

No. of applicants:

115

(18%)

527

(82%)

642

(100%)

No. on panel:

8

(20%)

32

(80%)

40

(100%)

No. offered posts to date:

7

(21%)

27

(79%)

34

(100%)

These figures clearly provide no support for the inference in part (d) of the question on which the proposal to introduce positive action to bring about a "fairer female-male balance" is based.
