Vol. 401 No. 6

Written Answers. - Foreign Languages.

Austin Deasy

Question:

33 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education the number of students who took (i) Chinese, (ii) Japanese and (iii) Arabic in the recent intermediate and leaving certificate examinations.

No candidates took the subjects in question.

At present there is no demand for examinations in any of these languages. However, the situation is constantly under review, and should circumstances change in the future my Department will respond to these changes.

For example, in the past my Department has on occasion provided certain subjects at the examinations where a special request was made for same. This year and last year a special paper was provided in Dutch and some years back a paper was provided in Swedish.
