Vol. 402 No. 3

Written Answers. - Rathfarnham Castle Restoration.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

149 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will outline his proposals for the restoration of Rathfarnham Castle, Dublin 14; his views on whether the 20th century wings should be demolished as they have no architectural, historical or cultural merit and have actually disfigured the 16th century castle; and the estimated timescale of the restoration project.

The plans for the restoration of Rathfarnham Castle include the restoration of the roof, which should be completed by the end of this year, the demolition of both the north and south wings subject, in the case of the north wing, to the agreement of Dublin County Council which owns it, and restoration work on the external facade and principal interior sections.

The Commissioners of Public Works stress that while it is difficult to give a specific time-scale for the completion of the work they aim to open the castle to the public in 1992.
