Vol. 403 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sweepstakes Unclaimed Prize Money.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

19 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the present position regarding unclaimed prize moneys in the Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake Fund; the value of such unclaimed prize money; the steps he intends to take to secure an equitable distribution of same, having regard to the interests of the former employees; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Bill necessary to allow me distribute these moneys has passed all stages in Dáil Éireann and has been referred to Seanad Éireann. As indicated in Dáil Éireann I propose to give a flat rate sum of up to £1,000 to pensioners who lost the exgratia element of their pensions and to distribute the balance on an age and service weighted basis among these employees who were made redundant in March 1987. Spouses of beneficiaries who have died since retirement will benefit to the same extent.

The total amount available for distribution is approximately £476,000.
