Vol. 403 No. 3

Written Answers. - Home Help Service.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

21 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the future of the home help service, in the context of the experiment in certain health board areas with health board funded care attendants.

There is no intention to run down the home help service, in fact the Eastern Health Board are enhancing their home help service as part of the plan to develop community care teams. This new grade/category of care attendant is viewed as complementary to the home help service and is not intended to supplant the latter. Care attendants will be members of multidisciplinary teams who will provide personal care and services to elderly people in their homes under the direction and guidance of public health nursing staff.
