Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Residential Care.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

213 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health the discussions, if any, which have been held with the Department of Education to co-ordinate the provision of suitable residential care for pupils with such serious behavioural problems in their schooling as to require special residential care, with particular reference to the case of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 who has not attended regular schooling for over a year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The specialist child and adolescent psychiatric service in the Eastern Health Board area have ongoing liaison arrangements with schools and any children requiring treatment would be referred to these services. I have had inquiries made of the Eastern Health Board in relation to the case referred to by the Deputy. The board are aware of the special needs of this case and I have asked them to continue their efforts to find a suitable residential place for this child. Pending the provision of this place I understand that the board are at present taking measures to relieve the home situation.
