Question:

216 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Health the number of social workers for the blind currently employed in each health board area; if he has satisfied himself with the current provision in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following is a summary of the number of social workers employed in each health board area to work directly with the blind:

Eastern Health Board	10
South Eastern Health Board	4	.5*
Southern Health Board	5
Midland Health Board	4
Mid Western Health Board	2	.5*
Western Health Board	3
North Western Health Board	4
North Eastern Health Board	4
Total	37

* One post is shared between the two health boards concerned.

In addition other social workers would also provide a social work service to blind people as and when required.
