Willie O'Dea

Question:

247 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Education if she will allocate extra finance for improvements to Salesian secondary school, Fernbank, North Circular Road, Limerick.

In view of the demographic trends and projected enrolments, the provision of additional second level permanent accommodation is not generally warranted in Limerick city. In the particular circumstances of this school, in June 1990, I received a deputation from the school authorities and agreed to allocate a specified sum as grant aid for a modified scheme to assist the school in replacing substandard accommodation to cater for its immediate needs.

Accordingly, my Department wrote to the school authorities on 10 July 1990 confirming my approval of the specified grant aid. It was emphasised that, in order to avail of the grant, the work should be completed in the current financial year, i.e. 1990. The school management were also asked to submit architect's plans and costings for the modified development to the Department.

To date, the costed proposals have not been submitted to my Department.
