Vol. 403 No. 4

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants Scheme.

Bernard Allen

Question:

57 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to raise the income limits for higher education grants, so as to bring them into line with other European countries.

I wish to point out that despite the past few years of severe financial constraints I have increased the income eligibility limits and rates of maintenance grant payable in line with the increase in the CPI. The income limits were increased by 4.2 per cent in respect of the 1990-91 academic year. I have also increased the fee element of grant in line with increases in tuition fee charges.

Data in relation to income limits operating in other European countries is not readily available in my Department.
