Vol. 403 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyconnell (Cavan) National Monument.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

1 Mr. Boylan asked the Taoiseach if, in relation to his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 15 of 22 May 1990, he will outline when a replica of the Killycluggin Stone will be erected at Templefort, Ballyconnell, County Cavan, in view of his commitment given at that time.

I will ensure that the original Killycluggin Stone and other antiquarian items of Cavan origin will be put on display in Cavan when the local authorities establish a suitable County Museum there. Should that not prove feasible in the short term, the National Museum will pursue the question of having a suitable replica of the stone made for display at a County Cavan location.

Six months ago I understood the Taoiseach to say that a replica would be erected in the place where this stone was found. It was taken away without the consent of the local people. I understand it is being returned to our museum in Cavan town, when it is built. I am talking about a replica on the site where it was found. It would have importance for tourism. The Taoiseach was in that region recently and saw the great work being done there, and I understand he appreciated it. It is not too much to ask. I am not referring to plastic or this modern material. I am talking about a stone replica made by local craftsmen. I can arrange that if the Taoiseach gives the go ahead.

It will be done.

I appreciate that.
