Vol. 403 No. 5

Written Answers. - DART System.

Richard Bruton

Question:

36 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport whether he has satisfied himself that the DART system has the ability to meet increasing demand from passengers for peak hour travel; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

DART has proved to be very successful with the number of passengers carried having increased from 11.7 million in 1985 to just over 15 million in 1989, an increase of over 28 per cent.

Irish Rail have responded to the increase to peak passenger carryings by adjusting the timetable to maximise the use of rolling stock.

I am informed by the chairman of CIE that the existing DART fleet is adequate to cater for any further increase in passengers in the foreseeable future.
