Question:

40 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence the number of second line reserve promotions made by (a) rank, (b) corps and (c) command in the period between 1 July 1990 and 31 October 1990; the number of potential Second Line Reserve officer promotions awaiting sanction by his Department or by the military authorities as at 31 October 1990; the number of Second Line Reserve officer vacancies as at 31 October 1990 by (a) rank, (b) corps, and (c) command; the rationale for leaving so many vacancies unfilled, particularly in the light of the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 72 of 10 July 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In the period from 1 July 1990 to 31 October 1990, a total of thirty-six officers of the Second Line Reserve were promoted, details as follows:

Second-Lieutenant to Lieutenant — Nil.

Lieutenant to Captain — 35.

Commands: Eastern — 12 (Infantry 9, Artillery 1, Signals 1, Supply and Transport, 1); Southern — 6 (Infantry 6); Western — 12 (Infantry 11, Artillery 1); Curragh — 3 (Infantry 2, Artillery 1); Slua Muiri 2.

Captain to Commandant — 1.
Command: Southern — 1 (Cavalry 1). The remainder of the information requested is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy at an early date.
