Vol. 403 No. 5

Written Answers. - Defence Forces' Transport Vehicles.

Michael Bell

Question:

41 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline as at 31 October 1990, the number of mini buses purchased for whole-time or substantial time periods by the Second Line Reserve since 1 January 1990; the amount expended in the line of civilian transport for movement of personnel in the period from 1 January 1989 to 31 October 1989; the amount expended on same in the period from 1 January 1990 to 31 October 1990; the reason for the variance between 1989 to 1990; whether this data is encompassed in subhead J; the number of sub-units who were allocated transport and saloon vehicles at 31 October 1985 and 31 October 1990; the number of unserviceable vehicles as at 31 October 1990; whether he has satisfied himself that the military effectiveness of the reserve has not been impaired by the lack of military transport allocated to sub-units; and the number of vehicles allocated to reserve units in Kerry.

A contract for the purchase of 20 minibuses for FCA use was placed early in 1990 and delivery of these vehicles will be completed in December 1990.

The amounts expended on the hire of civilian transport for the movement of FCA personnel are as follows for the periods specified: 1 January 1989-31 October 1989 — £64,000; and 1 January 1990-31 October 1990 — £109,000.

The variation is due to an element of cost increase and increased hireage of civilian transport. The expenditure in question is charged to subhead D of the Defence Vote.

The other information requested is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy at an early date.
