Vol. 403 No. 5

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers' Medical Board of Appeal.

Michael Noonan

Question:

47 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance the reason the Disabled Drivers' Medical Board of Appeal has not been set up; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that up to 30 cases are already awaiting the judgment of the proposed board; if he will expedite the setting up of this board; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Disabled Drivers' Medical Board of Appeal was established under the Disabled Drivers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1989, which came into force on 21 December 1989. The three members of the board were appointed by me last February on the recommendation of my colleague the Minister for Health as provided for in the regulations.

To date, a total of 54 appeals have been received by the board. Decisions have been given in 23 cases and a further 16 appeals are due to be heard on 7 and 8 of December 1990. Dates for hearing of the remaining 15 cases will be arranged as soon as possible.
