Vol. 403 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefit.

Michael Noonan

Question:

46 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance the reason a person (details supplied) in County Dublin who has her co-habiting partner's means taken into account when being assessed for unemployment assistance by the Department of Social Welfare has no provision made for her in the tax allowances allocated to her partner by the Revenue Commissioners.

As the Deputy will be aware, there are no special tax allowances for unmarried couples living together as man and wife. This tax treatment reflects the general law relating to marriage.
