Vol. 403 No. 6

Written Answers. - Promotion of Investment from Abroad.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

20 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will instruct all Irish embassies to make contact with Irish citizens living abroad with a view to encouraging such Irish nationals to open businesses and direct industries to Ireland in the interest of more employment and investment.

Nora Owen

Question:

41 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the instructions he has issued to Irish Ambassadors abroad to involve themselves in actively seeking investment for Ireland by way of industry contracts; and whether these Ambassadors have been encouraged to stimulate Irish Nationals to return to Ireland to open businesses and invest directly their expertise and resources in the Irish economy.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 20 and 41 together.

All our diplomats abroad are actively engaged in the course of their day to day work in the promotion of Ireland as a location for investment. They naturally keep in particularly close contact with Irish citizens abroad and are in a position to keep them fully informed of economic developments and opportunities at home.

Our embassies and consulates work in close co-operation with the IDA in the attraction of investment and of entrepreneurial skills both from the local Irish communities and otherwise.

The status, and consequent access, afforded to diplomats is of course particularly useful in making contacts with the industrial and business communities and is fully utilised to this end.
