Vol. 403 No. 6

Written Answers. - Violations of Human Rights in Peru.

Nora Owen

Question:

45 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the many violations of human rights in Peru; and if he will raise Irish concerns at EC and United Nations level.

The EC member states, including Ireland, have been following developments in Peru, including in the human rights area, before and since the election of President Fujimori. The question of human rights in Peru has also been raised in the UN human rights machinery.

The authorities in Peru are regularly made aware of the concern of the EC member states and every effort is being made to encourage the new President to make all possible efforts to ensure full respect for human rights.

On the occasion of the investiture of the President the Community and its member states issued a statement in which they expressed the hope that Peru will rediscover the path of peace and development, in full respect of the fundamental rights of the human person.
