Vol. 403 No. 8

Written Answers. - Duncannon (Wexford) Pier Development.

Ivan Yates

Question:

107 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Marine the present position concerning the development and extension of Duncannon Pier, New Ross, County Wexford; if all the necessary survey work has been completed; the current position in relation to the planning of the extension; when a decision will be made on the necessary financing of the development; the procedures which have to be adopted and invoked prior to construction; and if his attention has been drawn to the increasing difficulties for fishermen in the area due to congestion and lack of facilities.

Works, comprising an extension to the pier and dredging of the harbour at Duncannon, are proposed in my Department's fishery harbour development programme. The increased berthage provided by this scheme would substantially improve conditions for fishermen at the harbour.

My Department recently wrote to Wexford County Council regarding arrangements to finance and undertake the works. In view of the limited engineering resources available to my Department, the council have been asked to consider the possibility of arranging for the design and undertaking of the scheme.
