Vol. 403 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dungarvan (Waterford) Fish Farming.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

106 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Marine the number of licences which have been issued by his Department for oyster farming in Dungarvan Bay, County Waterford; and when the bay will be designated for the purpose of such farming.

No licences have been issued to date for oyster farming in Dungarvan Bay. A number of applications for such licences have been received. Scientific surveys of the area have been commissioned. When the results of those surveys have been assessed decisions will be made on the suitability of the areas for aquaculture and, in the light of that decision, on the most appropriate licensing mechanism. No decision has been taken in regard to possible designation of the bay under the 1980 Fisheries Act.
