Vol. 403 No. 8

Written Answers. - Carrickmacross (Monaghan) Sewerage Facilities.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

149 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the damage caused to the fishery in Lough na Glack, County Monaghan by overenrichment due, among other factors, to incomplete treatment of Carrickmacross town sewage; and the reason it took the local authority eight years to commence the works necessary to remove phosphate from the sewage effluent.

The formulation of proposals in relation to water and sanitary services schemes is a matter for individual local authorities.

The existing secondary treatment plant at Carrickmacross is at present being modified to improve the quality of effluent being discharged. A proposal recently submitted to my Department by Carrickmacross Urban District Council to provide phosphorous removal facilities has been approved and this will be carried out as part of the present construction work. This scheme when completed will abate pollution of the receiving waters from this source.
