Vol. 403 No. 10

Written Answers. - Dublin EC Cultural Capital.

Dick Spring

Question:

138 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport (a) the funds (b) the resources and (c) the ideas or other supports he plans to contribute towards the effort of Dublin as the European Community cultural capital for 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware, the organisation and management of Dublin's year as the European City of Culture 1991 is being undertaken by Dublin Promotions Organisation Limited (DPOL), an independent company especially established for the purpose.

Bord Fáilte, and their regional company for the Dublin area, Dublin tourism, who are represented on DPOL, will be responsible for maximising the tourism potential of the event. The board will feature the programme for European Year of Culture prominently in their overseas promotions for next year's season. In addition, the board have made a special, once off, allocation of £70,000 to Dublin tourism specifically to assist promotion and marketing of this event.

Dublin Tourism plan also to open the Dublin Writers Museum in June. The museum will interpret Dublin's literary heritage and become the focus for the further development of our capital as a major location for cultural tourism.
