Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Vehicle Regulation Breaches Prosecutions.

Alan Shatter

Question:

142 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice whether any prosecutions had been taken by the Garda Síochána against persons driving imported secondhand cars which are not fitted with laminated windscreens in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 158 of 1985 and approved safety belts in accordance with Statutory Instrument No. 96 of 1971; and, if not, if he will ask the Garda Síochána to investigate the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that their records of prosecutions in respect of breaches of the regulations governing the construction, equipment and use of vehicles do not indicate whether prosecutions have been taken in respect of breaches of the specific provisions referred to in the question. The total number of prosecutions taken in 1989 for breaches generally of those regulations was close to 30,000.
