Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Primary Schools Funding.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

202 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if she intends to increase the capitation grant to primary schools; if so, the amount of the proposed increase; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In 1990 the rate of capitation grant was increased by 5.7 per cent. An additional £1.5 million was provided in 1990 to enable special assistance to be given to schools serving disadvantaged areas.

As part of the Programme for Economic and Social Progress it is proposed to introduce a phased programme commencing in 1992 to expand the provision of caretaking and clerical services to all national schools with 100 pupils upwards. For this purpose schools not being provided with such services under existing arrangements, including the social employment scheme, an additional grant not exceeding £15,000 (500 pupils X £30) will be paid to schools of 500 pupils upwards with a pro rata provision in relation to school size for the schools in the range 100 to 499.
