Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Drink Driving Laws.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

42 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the number of motorists breathalysed during the month of December, 1990; the number who were found to be positive; if, in view of the success of the anti-drink driving campaign over the Christmas period, he intends to continue the campaign on an all year round basis; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in the month of December, 1990 a total of 4,468 motorists suspected of drunken driving were asked to take a breathalyser test. In 920 of these cases the breathalyser test indicated that the amount of alcohol consumed by the motorist in question was in excess of the legal permitted level of 100 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

I have been assured by the Garda authorities that enforcement of the drink driving laws will continue to be given very high priority.
