Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Roscommon Flood Damage.

John Connor

Question:

93 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the recent serious flood damage in the Suck valley in the Ballymore Glynst and Williamstown areas, County Roscommon, he will make a special allocation to the River Suck Joint Drainage Board to clear major obstructions in the main river channel at Castlecoole and Athleague, or alternatively if he will request the Office of Public Works to do the necessary clearance work.

The provision of funds for works to be undertaken by the River Suck Joint Drainage Board is a matter for the County Councils of Galway and Roscommon.

The Office of Public Works have no power to undertake the clearance works mentioned in advance of a comprehensive arterial drainage scheme for the entire Suck river catchment. Such a scheme has had to be deferred pending the resolution of the Shannon flood problem. Neither does that office have any funds from which a grant for the works might be made.
