Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Importation of Angel Dust.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

114 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the circumstances in which an official of his Department is reported to have been suspended following a discovery of a consignment of illegal hormone growth-promoters known as angel dust; if he will give details of the seizure; whether there is any evidence to suggest that previous consignments got through by the same route; if he plans any new steps to deal with the illegal importation and use of angel dust; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following the detection of illegal hormone growth promoters coming through parcel post from the United States, officers of the customs investigation branch and my Department investigating the matter found evidence which suggested that investigation of an officer of my Department was warranted. It was, therefore, decided to suspend the officer from duty and pay pending the investigation.

The investigation to date has resulted in the seizure of a quantity of hormonal growth promoters, implant guns and empty cartridges along with a quantity of a powder which has been identified as angel dust. Investigations by both the customs authorities and my Department are continuing.

I am satisfied that the regulations which I introduced last July give adequate legal powers to deal with the illegal importation, sale and use of illegal growth promoting substances.

I am determined that any drift towards the use of these substances will be counteracted and stopped. I can assure the Deputy that my Department and the other State authorities concerned will continue their vigorous campaign against the illegal use of these substances.
