Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - EC Work Visas.

Dermot Fitzpatrick

Question:

120 Dr. Fitzpatrick asked the Minister for Labour the number of countries in the EC which require Irish people to have a work visa.

Irish persons taking up employment in any country which is a member state of the European Community do not require work permits, with the exception of Spain and Portugal. Under a derogation which was granted on their admission to the Community, work permits must be obtained in respect of Irish and other EC workers seeking employment in these two member states. A similar position exists in respect of Spanish and Portuguese persons taking up employment here or elsewhere in the EC.

On 1 January 1993, when the transition arrangements are terminated, the work permit requirement will lapse in the case of Spain and Portugal.
