Grants under the programme of amenity and environmental works at larger beaches may be paid for works consisting of the provision of access, parking facilities, landscaping and other environmental improvements, works to deal with litter and other such problems, facilities for lifeguards, picnic facilities, limited games-sports facilities and sites for kiosks and mobile shops, facilities for the display of information on water safety etc., and works which assist in meeting standards set for the blue flag scheme for beaches. In addition, beaches qualifying for grant assistance must be monitored in accordance with, and meet other requirements of, the European Communities (Quality of Bathing Water) Regulations, 1988 and 1989.
Applications for beach grants are assessed having regard to these criteria and the finance available for the grants scheme.
