Vol. 404 No. 7

Written Answers. - Supreme Court Appeals Delays.

Bernard Allen

Question:

146 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline his proposals to reduce the waiting list for appeals to the Supreme Court, some of which are now taking up to four years; and the number of cases now pending.

I am aware of the position referred to and ways of dealing with it are under consideration in my Department.

On 31 July 1990 there were 868 cases under appeal to the Supreme Court of which, on that date, 166 had been certified by the appellant solicitor as being ready to proceed. Appeals are not placed in the list until such certificate has been given.
