Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Westmeath Taxi Ranks.

Paul McGrath

Question:

178 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Environment when he will introduce regulations to allow the creation of taxi ranks in Mullingar and Athlone; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a request for the appropriate legislation was lodged with his Department in early 1990 by Westmeath County Council and the Garda Síochána; if his attention has further been drawn to the difficulties being encountered by legitimate public hire licence holders because of this delay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As indicated in the reply to Question No. 12 of 6 February 1991, I have decided to initiate a fundamental review of the law governing the operation of small public service vehicles generally.

One of the central issues to be addressed in this review will be the relationship between public hire and private hire vehicles.

In advance of the completion of the review, I do not propose to make any changes in the present situation pertaining to the status of small public service vehicles in any area.
